The full-size vessel
  • The HMS HOOD was a battle cruiser of the British Royal Navy of 1918 and was named after Admiral Samuel Hood, the 1st Viscount Hood (1724 to 1816).
  • In the years between the wars, the Hood was the largest warship in the world, at a time when the British public felt closely linked to its navy. Its name and its specifications were generally known; it was referred to as the Mighty Hood. Because of its popularity, it was often used for visits to other countries, to "show the flag".
  • In 1941, the Hood was sunk by high-angle fire in the Strait of Denmark in a battle together with the Prince of Wales against the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen. The sinking of the Hood shocked the British people and led in government circles to the demand to "sink the Bismarck": which then occurred a few days later.
